As the disclaimer fine-print is quick to remark: do not use raw lemonade as fuel. It needs to be processed into hydrogen.
Hydrogen can actually be used to power an internal combustion engine, but it is most efficient when used in a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) like the 2016 Toyota Mirai.
Will cars really be fueled by lemonade? Probably not lemons-- but hydrogen fuel is made by running an electric current through water. Water is actually not a very good conductor of electricity, so electrolytes must be added to the water, like sodium, or... lemon juice.
The point is, we can use things otherwise going to waste to create hydrogen, and that's a big deal. As a fuel source, hydrogen is flexible. It can come from many things, including landfill gasses, decomposing manure, and water.
The refinement process can be powered on renewable electricity from wind or solar power. This makes hydrogen an incredibly sustainable energy transportation system.
